I knew that i needed a new camera when I reached the point of couldn’t getting more from the point-and-shoot Canon PowerShot devices that i have been using for six years now. I took a lot of pictures, because they’re handy and portable and I always had my camera with me, but I started experiencing problems like poor performance at low-light settings and delay between shots.

I’ve been using a Canon Powershot I2 IS for the full 3 years now. Very solid digital camera with a great 12X zoom. However, I needed a camera to carry in my pocket. So many times I just didn’t want to drag a large camera with me to parties or events. This camera fills the bill. I now carry it everywhere.

The photos it creates are stunning. The 8 megapixels and 3X zoom produces a picture that you can crop to the point that you get almost the same image as you would have with the 5 megapixels 12X zoom lens. The film feature is great too, even greater than the I2 IS.

The camera feels great in your hand with a solid, superior feeling. If you have used Canon cameras before the menus are very intuitive. I would not have purchased this camera (or any camera for that matter) if it did not have the Picture Stabilization feature. This is especially a must as you get older.

We did close-up photographs on flowers and even hair and eyelashes and it’s impressive what resolution we got with the camera and with such clarity. The camera is accessible to use and is little smooth and compact. I got the one in brown color and it looks different and sohpisticated without searching too overly girly or masculine. Sound quality through the video recording was crisp and images were good and clear and not at all pixelated.

By the way there is an advantage to the Brown color: If you get to use the optical view finder outside, the camera itself makes minimal glare for you eye to see more clearly through the small opening. The color also makes the LCD playback pop. And as a bonus, it truly makes the camera a luxury look, you have to see it in person to value the color.

I recently took it to a monthly card party and everyone went wild over it. So much so that one individual sat right down at the computer and bought one!

If you want a sub-compact, little camera that makes great images, I highly recommend the Canon SD1100IS. Definitely a good buy and well worth the money.

Dell Wasabi Portable Printer This new little color printer is not only cute: it’s small (4.8″ x 2.9″ x 0.9″), lightweight (8 oz.), prints wirelessly (or via USB) and uses the advanced new ZINK printing technology. ZINK stands for “zero ink”, and the secret is in the paper. It looks like regular white photo paper, but consists of layers with embedded color crystals, which are activated by heat generated in the printer during the printing process. The resulting print looks like a regular photo. The Wasabi produces 2×3 borderless prints with peel-off sticky backs (great for scrapbooking) and can hold 12 sheets of paper at a time. It comes in black, blue or pink and costs $99.

Fluorescent Pink Diana F+ Camera When I made the switch to digital after years of shooting with film, I found myself with quite a bit of unused film in my refrigerator door, getting closer to its expiration date every day. I couldn’t stand the thought of just throwing it out, and kept hoping I’d come up with a creative way to use it.

The basic kit ($105) comes with a removable plastic lens (which produces wonderful, soft, saturated, vignetted images) and external flash (with plastic color gel filters). A kit with all the basics plus a 35mm back and 9 rolls of color film is $175. Other lens options include a 20mm fisheye, a 38mm super-wide, and a 110mm telephoto lens.

Sony’s VAIO JS PC This iMac look-alike comes in an elegant pale pink (as well as silver, black and bronze) and I have to say I do like the design. Other things to like, in addition to it taking up a lot less space than ordinary desktops, are: the 20.1″ LCD display, 4GB of memory, the 2.50GHz, 2MB L2 cache Intel Pentium dual-core processor, the 500GB (7200RPM) SATA hard drive, and the built-in microphone and webcam (with face tracking technology). At the time of writing, it retails for $949.99

Dell’s New Inspiron Desktops I’m surprised it has taken so long for colorful desktops to show up on the market. There is no limit to the colors you can get on a laptop, but so far, it’s been black or silver only for the desktops. Well, that’s slowly changing, with the arrival of the VAIO above, and now Dell’s new Inspiron line. They have so far only been released in China, but are scheduled to appear on the US market later this spring.

The Inspirons will be available as both mini-towers and slim towers and the customizable fronts will come in black, white, blue, red, orange, green, plum, and “Promise Pink” (with $5/sale going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation). These desktops will have a multitude of upgrade options, and the base price for the least expensive configuration will be $299.

Pokens - Digital Business Cards Spend a lot of time on social networking sites? Is keeping track of your IDs and other info starting to get difficult? Then check out Pokens, keychain-sized figures (with a USB connector) that can store all that info in one place for you. But not only that, by having your Poken high five another Poken, you can easily exchange your social networking profiles with friends, making it easy for them to find you quickly on Facebook, MySpace, etc. And the makers of this little gadget have thought of everything: if someone asks you to Poken with them, but you don’t really want to, instead of rudely saying no, just press your Poken’s palm twice, and it will go into “discreet” mode, and all they’ll get is a “Ghost Card”, none of your information. I bought the Canon SD770IS to substitute my PowerShot A95. A few years ago, I purchased a Digital Elph for my daughter and found myself using that small and light camera, instead of my A95. Due to the advancements in technology, it was time to upgrade.

The most important feature in looking for a replacement was the small size and the use of a rechargeable battery. Resolution was less of a deal as the A95, with only five Mpixels, produced clear pictures. The most notable improvement, even over the previous Elph, was in the increased speed of all functions including boot up and picture recording.

Picture quality is amazing and the color balance and metering is excellent. If you now own a Canon digital camera and you are thinking of buying a new one, the basic navigation stays mainly identical, so that part will be familiar to you. Access to the camera’s shooting styles use menus instead than of a physical dial as on the A95.

The screen is fairly large, well enlightened and easy to view, even in bright light. Finally, the most important condition with digital picture taking should be image quality and ease of use. I have years of experience with manual SLR film cameras and similar point and shoots, and this model fits perfectly for true “turn it on and shoot” picture taking. Images are clear and vivid with solid detail and vibrant color.

The luminosity meter does a great job of assessing the settings and selecting the best possible combination of the shutter speed and aperture.

A high capacity (SDHC) storage card will hold an insane amount of photographs even at the highest resolution. Uploading photos to a PC or Mac is easy with either the supplied software or Apple’s iPhoto software, which works seamlessly with the camera. I would recommend both a high capacity SD card and the optional leather case to protect the camera, especially if dropped.

This camera just blows me away. It makes astonishing pictures in full-auto mode. In situations where full-auto doesn’t quite do the job as good as possible, this camera lets you change of ISO settings, light balance, focus method, and tons of other factors.

I extremely recommend this camera for someone looking for an easy-to-use, lightweight, little and good digital camera. It’s simply a marvellous camera at a great price.

Wasabi Portable Color Printer Roughly the size of a box of kitchen matches (4.8″ x 2.9″ x 0.9″), the Wasabi portable printer from Dell is easy to bring along just about anywhere. Diana F+ In Flourescent Pink Ah, huge stack of film in my refrigerator door - what shall I do with thee? I could dig out my old camera I suppose, but my new digital one is so much better but I can’t just throw all that film out. Sound familiar? I’m sure I’m not the only one with leftover film from the pre-digital days of photography hesitant to throw it in the garbage.

It not only looks great, it does save you tons of valuable space. This non-customizable, pale pink PC has a 20.1″ screen, 4GB memory, a 2.50GHz Intel Pentium Dual-Core processor, a 500GB 7200RPM SATA hard drive, 2 3-watt speakers, and a built-in webcam and microphone. The price? $949.

Colorful Inspiron Desktops From Dell Finally, someone is adding a rainbow of colors to desktops as well. While laptops are available in all imaginable colors and designs, desktops have remained in the silver/black range. Dell’s new Inspiron desktop line has so far only been released in China, but is scheduled to appear on the US market later on this spring.

Available as a mini-tower or a slim tower, the customizable Inspirons come in 8 different colors. The pink one is part of Dell’s “Promise Pink” series, which also includes several of their laptops, and Dell donates $5 from each sale to the Susan G. Komen foundation. Starting price for the base configuration will be $299.

Pokens Here’s something for your “what won’t they think of next” file Pokens are tiny figures (in shapes like pandas, bees, aliens etc.) with USB connectors and a giant “hand”. An electronic business card of sorts, the Poken stores your social networking profiles (you choose which ones to include) and when you meet another Poken owner, all you need to do is have your Pokens high five each other, press a button, and voila! You have exchanged all your social networking info, so that your new friend easily can find you on Facebook, MySpace, etc. Where is the pink? The “Geisha” Poken is a nice fuchsia and the “Piggy” a pale pink (although Piggy looks more like a human baby to me). They retail for around $20 and can be hard to find in the US (for now).
