They send managers and manager-wannabes to a wide range of leadership training activities, formal MBA programs, leadership seminars, weekend retreats, and even outward bound adventures. How Do I Get Good Exposure for My Photographs?

As most beginners and amateurs will discover, there are some curious frustrations that come along. Of these, the most common are taking a photo on a bright day of something such as snow only to have it turn out too dark or taking a picture at night and having it turn out to bright. So, why does this occur?

Well, first of all it is important to note that because a lot of the time cameras reproduce more or less what we see with our eyes, it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that we can just put the camera in fully automatic mode, point, shoot, and get a photo that looks just like what we saw. But this is not always possible, and it is because of the way your camera makes decisions when you press the button.

Unless you are using a fully manual camera, your camera must make the decision as to how much light to allow the sensor to be exposed to. If there is too little light, the subjects of the photograph may appear almost invisible, also known as ‘underexposed.” In reverse, if there is too much light allowed, areas of the photo may be completely white, also known as “overexposed.”

A camera will make these decisions based on the fact that most scenes, most of the time, are comprised of both light and dark tones that average out about the same. This average is commonly referred to as “18% grey.” This premise is what allows the camera to determine how much aperture and shutter speed should be utilized. However, in certain situations, this rule of thumb can break down.

A prime example to better explain this phenomenon is the classic photo of a polar bear in the snow on a bright sunny day. You will use your camera to reproduce this beautiful scene you viewed with your own eyes in a bright, perfect photo. However, because your camera is using its rule of thumb to determine the shutter speed and aperture, it is more likely your photo will depict the snow and polar bear as dirty grey.

The other situation is when you take a photo in dark conditions, perhaps a street at night lit by some streetlamps. Here you want most of the photo to be dark, with perhaps some lighter areas that were illuminated by the streetlights. Instead what you may get is dark areas that are dull brown rather than black, and lighter areas that are overexposed. Again, your camera has assumed this scene, like others, is 18% grey, and has exposed it accordingly.

To manage these situations, you will need to take over control of your camera. This means the camera will no longer be able to make its own decisions. One way to achieve this is to dial the ‘exposure compensation’ setting on your camera. A good rule of thumb to go by would be one stop forward for bright scenes and one dial back for darker scenes. An additional option is to turn your camera into manual mode. This will allow you room to play and experiment with settings as you view them in your LCD screen until you determine the exposure you are looking for.

Teach Guitar and Make Money!

If you can play guitar reasonably well then why not use that skill to teach guitar and generate valuable extra income or even a full time job? Read on to find out how I and others have done exactly that.

Perhaps you are under the false impression that one needs to be an awesome player in order teach guitar but I can assure you that this is not at all the case. In reality 95% of people coming to you for lessons will be beginners on acoustic guitar and they will make up the mass market of people applying to you for lessons.

So long as you have been playing for a while and are confident I would suggest that it’s likely you are already good enough to teach guitar to this mass market of beginners. Normally when you enter a new venture to make money it involves some kind of learning curve but, you already know how to play guitar… the skill is already there! All you need is to apply yourself to teaching it.

Now I’m going to tell you the crucial element of being able to teach guitar, it’s not how good you are on guitar, it’s that you can communicate well with others and have a friendly, warm personality.

Not naming any names, but I personally know some absolutely amazing guitar players who are also absolutely terrible at teaching guitar. Don’t believe that the best guitar players make the best guitar teachers! When you teach guitar, put yourself in the position of the student. Remember just how hard it was for you when you first started trying to change for G to C or the dreaded F and Bm. This is the first step to understanding your market and being able to teach guitar successfully.

Once you understand things from the students side youll immediately become sympathetic to their situation be able to teach guitar to them in a successful and dynamic way.

Those of us who teach guitar enjoy some great benefits. The first one would be that it provides a valuable source of income and that you can teach guitar practically anywhere. Even in remote places youd be surprised how word can spread and the numbers of people who would be interested.

When you teach guitar you are your own boss and able to decide your own teaching hours based around your current lifestyle and other commitments.

Since you are in control of practically every aspect of your teaching business, you have the freedom to size up any competition from other guitar teachers and adjust your lesson fees accordingly. You may well find that you have no competition at all.

In future articles well discuss what you must do in order to prepare properly to teach guitar and well also certainly need to talk about advertising because when you teach guitar knowing how to advertise effectively will mean the difference between success and failure.
