    Choreographed Moves in Wrestling

    Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

Wrestling moves are not straight-forward, since if you are not paying close attention, you might believe the moves are real. At the moment I am still a little reluctant to fill you in on the moves, since I am not a wrestling fan, however my son is, and he is going to give us the inside information on wrestling moves to help us see it for what it is, fake.

One of the older moves is the banana splits. However, today, the move is known as the ‘leg splits’. During this move, one starts wrestling with both hands on the legs of the other wrestler and splits the legs apart as far as the legs will go. This move will force the wrestler to put his/her own shoulders to the mat. If the wrestling move were for real and the wrestler fails to submit, his/her legs would split some muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc.

The ‘Cobra Clutch’ is another of the holds that would in reality cause agony. The cobra move is universally recognizable as the cross chokes or arm locks. The challenging wrestler will come from the back of the other pugilist and using a single arm in the “Nelson Hold”. The opponent will then use his/her arm to tug the wrestler’s arm trying to prevent him from pulling across the neckline and choking him as a result. The back clutch, or bombard is similar but the challenging wrestler is on his back under his opponent extending his arms upward from behind.

The ‘Rock Bottom’ move involves the adversary pulling his opponents arm over his shoulder. The wrestler then places the opponents arm over his/her shoulder and lifts and dives forward onto the mat. During this attack, the challenger is hitting the mat head first, which if actually executed, would strain bones or at least result in some serious pain.

The ‘Choke Slam’ is the move when the attacking wrestler grips the opponent’s arm and lifts his arm close by his opponent’s side, over his shoulder. Then he lifts the opponent and throws him down onto the mat.

The ‘Big Boot’ is a running attack. The wrestler lifts up his boot, connecting with the face of his opponent. So, a boot in the face, in other words! This would definitely put a person on his/her backside any time, causing the kicked person to feel severe giddiness for a while.

What makes wrestling so enthralling is the phoney dialogue, the costumes, the characters and the moves. If you think of the Superman films, and how he dresses, you will notice that without his costume he wouldn’t have any character appeal as Superman. Likewise, the wrestlers wear outfits that make them seem like they are super heroes of the ring, indicting the villains. Each wrestler has his/her persona in the ring. It is usually quite placid, but made to look violent!

However, wrestling does have rules, as well as restrictions, even though the moves are all phoney. Wrestlers must respect the ropes of the ring, as well as the colour codes.

The styles have their own set of rules, however freestyle and folk style are similar. Usually, the styles are enacted so well that you wouldn’t know if the wrestlers are using the freestyle, folk style, or Greco style.

As with a dance routine, most of the moves are choreographed and rehearsed, which means that a director is out of sight using his/her hands to direct the wrestlers in the rings. For the most part, wrestling is nothing more than an act with a few exemptions like when the KAYFABE brakes down, in which case a real fight can break out. The KAYFABE is wrestling’s means of verbal communication.

A Family Christmas in NY’s Catskill Mountains

    Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

[I:http://exporubens.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/LJJames2.jpg] Right now for most Americans money is getting a bit tight. We all still want to have those great family trips that we take every year, but we have to watch how much we spend. Well I just had a great time with my family in New York’s Catskill Mountains that didn’t put us all in the poor house.

I was in the Catskill area with Family for the Christmas Holidays. My younger Sister has three kids. Which makes me an Uncle and I always enjoy spending time with my two Nieces and Nephew, The Youngest is 6 years old and the oldest is 13 years old. Now when the age gap is that far apart it can make finding something they all want to do very difficult. Well We where also looking for something to do that not only the kids but us adults could enjoy as well.

It took some time but my younger Brother came up with the idea of Snow Tubing. It sounded good to me. The Kids loved the idea and so did my Sister, Her Husband and even my Mother. OK so then came the part where the money comes in. I called up Windham Mountain to get their Snow tubing times and rates (http://www.windhammountain.com/mountain/tubing) . When they told me their snow tubing rates I was surprised as they where not too bad $20 a person for two hours $25 for four hours and they had a Friday night special of only $15 dollars from 4pm to 9pm ! Only $15 for Five hours, I was sold as it just happened to be Friday.

So the group of Nine of us piled into two vehicles and we where off to do some tubing on Windham’s 650 foot snow covered snow tubing slope. We where Lucky as the weather was warm for December in the Catskill Mountains. The Slope was perfect, there where about ten lanes to slide down and the Snow Tubing staff kept the line moving. [I:http://exporubens.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/LJJames9.jpg]

Let me see if I can explain how everything went. When we got up to the Slope we grabbed a large canvased covered Snow Tube then picked a lane. We could go down the lane in groups or by ourselves. I have to say my first trip down caught me by Surprise. It has been a few years since I have been sleigh riding but I know I never went that fast down the old hill. Now hearing me say how fast the slope is, may make you think you or your kids might be scared. Don’t worry about that, I saw kids as young as three years old tubing down the Slope and they were loving it!

At the bottom of the hill there are mats placed at the end of every lane to slow you down safely, Along with attendants ready to help you if you needed it( I didn’t see anyone who needed any help). Now anyone who has gone Sleigh riding as a kid remembers the trip down the hill was always the fun part, It’s the walk back up that is work. Well not at Windham’s snow tube park. The canvases that cover the snow tubes have long straps that hook up to a conveyor so all you have to do is sit in your tube and then slowly slide back up the Slope! The Straps also make it perfect so the attendants can spin you (only if you ask nicely) as you are sliding down the slope.

After about three hours of snow tubing everyone but my brother and his girlfriend was getting tired. So we went into the large Ski lodge, which is only about ten feet from the snow tubing lanes. While inside the lodge we all enjoyed some nice hot Chocolate while sitting by the Fire place.

I am not a big fan of winter activities, But I have to say we all had a great time even if we didn’t make it the full five hours. Life can often get a little crazy and too fast paced, Every once in a while we all need some affordable old fashion family fun, (With a few modern convinces of course)

Why Skateboarding Is Beneficial To Kids

    Thursday, April 9th, 2009

The sport of skateboarding is becoming more and more popular all over the world. Children, teens, and young adults alike are all becoming astonished with the sport. Skateboarding parks are being built in many cities and towns around the world and kids are trading traditional sports like baseball or soccer for time spent enjoying the extreme activity of skateboarding.

Most people have a picture in their minds of the kinds of people that enjoy skateboarding, and their pictures are not always pleasant. Skateboarding is usually reserved for teens and young adults that haven’t quite connected with other people or activities and who are looking for a place of identity.

There may be a little truth in this, but it is no different from any other sport that is out there like basketball or football. Football players hang out together and so do skateboarders, and if you are a skateboarder that is what you are usually identified as.

Let me get to all of the great benefits that skateboarding has to offer for the younger crowd. First off it gets them active, and not closed in to lazy habits that could lead to health conditions in the future, such as sitting around the house all day playing video games and watching television.

I’d suggest that a teen or young adult who spends hour after hour doing hobbies that are inactive is actually in more danger than a teen or young adult doing an extreme activity like skateboarding. Children who start skateboarding at a young age learn to love physical activity and will often enjoy the health benefits of that activity for years to come.

For kids one of the best things that could be offered in skateboarding is making friends. For the kids that are not that social and not good at making friends, could easily socialize with another kids that lives near by and loves to skate, making skate buddies is a great way for kids to interact.

Skateboarding is not the cheapest sport for a kid to take part in, but by far it is not the most expensive either. You can find a fully assembled deck for under a hundred bucks, knee pads, elbow pads and a helmet for around 20 dollars, and shoes from about 30 dollars. There are lots of free skate parks that are out there world wide also.

So as you can see there are many great benefits for kids to get into skateboarding. Skateboarders in general are not a bad crown of people, no worse than football or basketball players, a sport is a sport and this is just a newer one that got a bad reputation in the beginning.
