Secondly, quality of flowers and the cost should be carefully considered. You must read the online reviews to find out if you are striking a good bargain in terms of the type of of flowers and quality of service.

Thirdly, the delivery of the flowers should be done through an appropriate mode. You should find out whether the florist delivers the flowers at the doorstep or couriers them. You must opt for the doorstep delivery method as the flowers won’t suffer damage and stay fresh that way. Many online florists have contracts with local retail florists in various areas, which allow them to send fresh flowers to the intended recipients.

Lastly, you must see that the method of accepting payments used by the online florist is safe and secure. Security is of prime importance in any transaction that you make online, and so you should see that the bank information that you furnish does not reach unscrupulous persons.

Black Orchid Plants

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

One very popular flower is the orchid. Most likely the reason for this is its exotic look. And even more unique, in the orchid family, is the black orchid. The black orchid’s genus name is bulbophyllum. This specific orchid belongs within a species that can vary greatly with their appearance.

The name bulbophyllum comes from both the Greek and Latin. The greek “phyllon” means leaf descriptive of it’s form, and the latin “bulbus” means bulb-like. This is one of the largest exotic plants in the Orchidaceae, or Orchid, family. And it is also one of the largest in the entire plant kingdom. The study of the black orchid is no simple task, as they number at about 1805 species.

Bublophyllum and their many different species can vary greatly. Some variations are in their environment, growth pattern, smell, form, and their look. It can be very difficult to identify because of this. Most of the time it is identifed by looking at the specifics and the structure of the flowers on the plant.

The genus itself can range from anything like an erect plant to a winding root climber. This, again is why it is so important to have the specifics of identifying a true bulbophyllum. For this reason it can be extremely difficult for even the most experienced taxonomist and yet since it is so challenging it makes it all the more interesting.

The conditions that the black orchid can grown in also vary. They can thrive in countries from Austrailia, Africa, Southeast Asia, South America, and Papua New Guinea. Nearly one third of these species orignate from Papua New Guinea, making this forest diverse with these complex plants. Some of these forests are actually losing their natural setting, which is in turn inhibiting their growth.

Many of the orchid species are under the threat of extinction. Four of them are currently on the endangered list, and sadly, two are critically endangered. The bulbophyllum filiforme is native to Nigeria and Cameroon, which it growns in sub-tropical or tropical dry forests, and is now on the critically threatened list because it is losing it’s naturual habitat. The second one on the list is bulbophyllum Kupenese, also native to Cameroon, but this species grows in sub-tropical moist montane.

The black orchid is both beautiful and exotic, not to mention intricate in its design. A common person may not be able to label a black orchid as such which makes it all the more interesting to those who study them and are able to differentiate.

Preserving the environments they grow in is very important so that we will be able to continue studying this obscure and complex plant.

Alien plant for your garden

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

If you have a bizarre taste in plants, I guarantee that this variety - the third in our series - will be to your liking.

The Welwitschia Mirabilis looks like an alien life form from a science fiction movie. It has a short thick trunk and only two leaves that grow continuously throughout the entire life of the plant.

The leaves can grow to a length of two to three meters and are split into several sections. The stem normally gets thicker than higher although it can grow to six feet high and 24-feet wide.

The long leaves of the plant are equipped with special structures that absorb water from the dew that forms during the night. Both male and female species of the plant produce nectar that attracts insects thus aiding in fertilization.

This tongue-twister is found mainly in the Namib desert in southwest Africa. It’s considered a living fossil since it has existed since the Jurassic period.

With that in mind, you never have to worry about losing this plant. The Welwitschia will keep you company for ages since it lives for 1,000 to 2,000 years - more than people do. That makes it a good conversation piece that you can hand down from generation to generation.

“Named after the Slovenian botanist Dr. Friedrich Welwitsch who discovered it in 1860, it is one of the oddest plants in existence. Although considered endangered due to its very slow growth and despite the fact that older plants are often sought by collectors, a fair number of plants exist in the wild. The plants living in Angola are better protected than the plants in Namibia, owing to the relatively high concentration of landmines in Angola, which keep collectors away,” according to the editors of Wikipedia.

“The species grows readily from seeds, which may be purchased from specialty seed dealers. The seed must be kept moist for the first couple of weeks and exposed to as much heat and light as possible during this time. Seeds collected from the wild are often heavily contaminated with spores of Aspergillus niger, which causes them to rot shortly after they germinate. Seeds from the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town, South Africa, or other cultivated sources are much cleaner and less likely to rot,” they added.
