Denver Surges Past San Diego To Remain Undefeated

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

The Denver Broncos are for real. The NFL’s most surprising undefeated team certainly answered any remaining doubters on Monday Night Football as they used a fourth quarter surge to put away the San Diego Chargers 34-23. Denver upped their record to 6-0 while San Diego dropped to 2-3. Denver’s special teams also excelled, with Eddie Royal becoming only the 11th player in NFL history to return a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the same game.

NFL football sports betting fans that backed the Broncos as +3 road underdogs were rewarded with the outright victory and Denver continued their season opening undefeated run against the pointspread (now 6-0 ATS). The Chargers, meanwhile, have only covered one of their five games this season.

Royal was virtually untouched on both of his kick returns, a first quarter 93 yard kickoff return and a second quarter 71 yard punt return. After the game, he gave credit to his blockers:

“Man, it was a great feeling. The guys did a great job of blocking. I’ve got to give them a lot of credit. They opened up the seams and it was a home run.”

Despite the rarity of his feat, he said he wasn’t surprised that he turned the trick:

“You’ve got to believe it can happen before you do it. I’ve got a lot of faith in the guys in front of me, so I wasn’t surprised.”

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels also praised Royal’s blockers:

“I think our guys did a great job of blocking and giving Eddie a chance to get started.”

While losing coach Norv Turner lamented his team’s poor kick coverage:

“It doesn’t matter who you are playing; you give up two big returns on a punt and a kickoff and it makes it tough”

Chargers’ QB Phillip Rivers talked about the loss and the team’s slow start to the 2009 NFL season:

“It’s going to be tough. We have to get over this one quick or we’ll find ourselves in trouble in Kansas City because it’s a short week.”

Denver will get a week off to enjoy their 6-0 start before returning to action on November 1 at Baltimore. The following week they’ll host the defending Superbowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football before traveling to Washington, DC to face the Redskins. San Diego will play at Kansas City this weekend with the Chargers a -5 road favorite and the total set at 44. They’ll return home to face their hated rivals, the Oakland Raiders, on November 1 before a road game against the New York Giants the following Sunday.

Steelers Send Vikings To First Defeat Of Season

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings are undefeated no more. The Pittsburgh Steelers’ used a couple of big plays from their defense in the fourth quarter to break open a close game and defeat the Vikings by a final score of 27-17. Favre put up decent yardage in the loss, throwing for 334 yards but had no touchdowns and an interception. The defending Superbowl Champion Steelers improved to 5-2, while the Vikings are now 6-1.

NFL pointspread players who backed the Steelers as -6 home favorites were rewarded with the cover. Pittsburgh had only covered one of their first six games heading into the contest, and the win improved their record against the number to 2-5. Minnesota dropped to 4-3 against the spread with the setback. The 44 points scored went UNDER the posted total of 46′. It was only the Vikings’ second UNDER of the season against five OVERS, while the Steelers have gone OVER in four of their seven games.

The Steelers largely shut down Minnesota’s rushing game, holding Adrian Peterson to 69 yards. Pittsburgh safety Ryan Clark underscored his team’s dominance against the run:

“That’s the biggest point of the game. You have the best running back in the world and you don’t give it to him. They’re saying they can’t beat us running, and that’s a major statement when you have the guy they have back there.”

Favre gave a feeble justification for the loss in his postgame interview:

“There were a lot of what ifs, a lot of reasons we didn’t win. The red zone was one of them. They’re physical, and they were as good as we thought they’d be. … When I came here and looked at our schedule and saw the Steelers game, I went, ‘Oh-h-h.’ ”

Favre has only thrown three interceptions in a Vikings’ uniform, but #3 was a costly one as it was returned by Steelers’ Keyaron Fox for a touchdown to put the game out of reach as Minnesota was driving for a potential game tying field goal. Afterwards, Fox recalled the play:

“Brett tried to force it in there and the running back bobbled it and slipped out of his hands and it fell into my lap. I had just run across the field after Peterson and I was winded, so it felt like it was 100-plus yards.”

The Vikings now face another big game next week as they head to Favre’s old stomping grounds in Green Bay for a battle with the Packers. It’ll be Favre’s first appearance at his old home in an enemy uniform. The Vikings are a +3 road underdog with the total set at 48. The Vikings will then have a bye weekend before hosting the lowly Detroit Lions on November 15. Pittsburgh will enjoy a bye week this week before returning to action on Monday, November 9th facing the Denver Broncos on the road.

Cowboys, Romo Make Short Work Of Seahawks

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

Quarterback Tony Romo had another solid game, and the Dallas Cowboys made short work of the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday afternoon in a 38-17 victory. Romo threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions, and receiver Miles Austin caught a touchdown pass for the third straight game. The Cowboys improved to 5-2 with the win, while the Seahawks dropped to 2-5.

The Cowboys also got on the winning side of the NFL pointspread ledger with the win and cover as -10 home favorites. Dallas is now 4-3 against the spread for the season, while Seattle fell to 2-5 versus the number. The 55 combined points scored went OVER the posted total of 46′. Dallas has gone OVER in 5 of 7 games this season and four in a row. Seattle eclipsed the total for only the third time this season.

Romo has made greater patience in the pocket a priority this season, and it’s paying dividends. Sunday’s game was his third straight without an interception and he’s stayed interception free in five games this season-more than he did all of last year. Romo couldn’t resist a joke at his own expense:

“Shock! I’m seeing things. It’s as simple as that. I’m not throwing and hoping.”

Head coach Wade Phillips expressed his pleasure, but didn’t want his team to start believing their own press clippings:

“I feel good about the progress we’ve made, but we’ve still got a ways to go.”

Team owner Jerry Jones was happy with the performance and already looking ahead to next Sunday’s game at Philadelphia:

“I’m just glad to see as many people really do as well and play as well as they did today. Philadelphia is the kind of game that I think we’re ready for. … Plus, I think we all remember so much — I know I do and so many players on this team remember — how we left Philadelphia last year.”

Seattle quarterback Todd Hasselbeck played well, amassing 249 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions but didn’t get much help from a defense that couldn’t put the necessary pressure on Romo. He sounded frustrated in his postgame comments:

“We put two weeks into this game plan. I felt like we were ready. We just didn’t get it done. …. I feel physically drained, emotionally drained. I’m frustrated. We’re all searching for answers.”

The big game for the Cowboys that Jerry Jones alluded to is next Sunday night as they travel to Philadelphia to face the Eagles. The Cowboys have been installed as +3 underdogs with the total set at 47′. They’ll head to Green Bay to take on the Packers the following Sunday. Seattle will host the lowly Detroit Lions next Sunday, with the Seahawks a -10 home favorite and the total set at 43. They’ll hit the road for their next two games, facing the Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings.

St. Petersburg Bowl Tickets

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

In only it’s second season, the St. Petersburg Bowl has already established itself as an exciting bowl in a great venue. This year’s bowl will take place on December 19,2009, just hours after the first bowl of the season, and will likely pit teams from Conference USA against the Big East. There are contingencies in place, however, so if for some reason one of those two conferences does not attend, a team from the sun Belt Conference will be invited. The St. Petersburg Bowl is played at Tropicana Field, which is home to the Tampa Bay Rays and Major League Baseball.

This year’s game will be televised on ESPN and will be one of the first bowl games of the year, sharing opening day with the New Mexico Bowl, which will kick off only a few hours earlier. Fans in the Tampa and St. Petersburg area will be able to see a FBS college bowl game right in their back yard, and the inaugural bowl featured local team South Florida winning over the Memphis Tigers. While some fans think the bowl game system should be replaced with a playoff system, for now the bowl system allows teams to enjoy a postseason.

Although Tropicana Field has to make adjustments to host a college football game, since it’s normal use is for professional baseball, the result is still a fantastic venue in a city that is a lot of fun to visits. If the proposed Rays stadium is approved, the game will follow to the new stadium, proof that the game has found a home on the Bay.

ESPN manages and owns the St. Petersburg Bowl, which is not unusual, as the network owns several bowl games. These include not only the New Mexico Bowl, but also the Armed Forces Bowl, the Maaco Las Vegas Bowl, the Hawaii Bowl and the PapaJohns.com Bowl. With ESPN getting more experience running bowl games, it’s possible there may be more bowls they take on in the coming seasons.

Last year’s inaugural St. Petersburg Bowl featured local South Florida against C-USA’s Memphis Tigers in a rout, where USF quarterback Matt Grothe torched the Tigers for 236 yards and three touchdowns. Grothe walked away with a win and the Most Outstanding Player award as his Bull won 41-14.

If you are excited about attending the St. Petersburg Bowl and are looking for tickets, be sure to scope out all of the best prices at one time using an online tool like TicketZinger.com, and also check out online selling sites like eBay. You can sometimes find good deals on places such as Craigslist, but be very careful. If a deals sounds too good to be true, or has a ’story’ that sounds too good, it probably is.

Dolphins Top Panthers In NFL Preseason Action

Monday, September 7th, 2009

The Miami Dolphins unveiled their version of the wildcat single wing offense for the first time in the NFL preseason and it worked like a charm. Starting QB Chad Pennington went 8 of 11 for 105 yards and a touchdown pass as the Dolphins first team offense played well in a 27-17 victory over the Carolina Panthers. The Dolphins improved to 2-0 in the NFL preseason while the Panthers dropped to 0-2.

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said that there werent any big secrets with his teams unique offensive set:

“There are really no secrets there, but it’s good homework for us — a chance to see what people have been studying during their offseason, and how they want to defend this.

Pennington was also pleased with the effectiveness of the offense:

“The wildcat went well. Anything we can do to get an edge, I’m all for it.”

Ronnie Brown caught Penningtons TD pass and joined in the chorus of positive comments:

“We made some strides. We’re going in the right direction.”

Carolina coach John Fox sounded nonplussed, a tone suggesting that his team might be keeping a lot of their schemes under wraps in the preseason:

“Our first unit looked a little sharper. We’re not there yet, but I thought it was an improvement.”

Defensive end Julius Peppers sounded a similar tone:

“We’ve got to work on everything. That’s what the preseason is for.”

After a rough opening week, Panthers starting QB Jake Delhomme was also upbeat after the game:

“We did better things tonight. It’s a process, but we’re doing all right.”

The Panthers will begin the NFL regular season on Sunday, September 13th at home against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Dolphins will face the Atlanta Falcons at the Georgia Dome to get their regular season slate underway.

How To Get Your Chelsea Tickets Without Having To Have The Day Off Of Work!

Friday, April 24th, 2009

How can it be so difficult to get tickets to watch Chelsea? Each week, many Chelsea supporters stand for hours at the ticket office hoping to get tickets a match. I was recently speaking to elderly Chelsea follower Dennis Anderson, who told how it hasnt always been the case at the Stamford Bridge.

“I remember when I could get our of bed on a Saturday morning, and I wouldn’t have to decide whether or not I was going to the match until a couple of hours before kick off”. It is clear that his loyalty to the club hasn’t evaporated in recent years as he went on to say; At 79 years old I cant really afford a season ticket. But I do still manage to make it to a number or games each season, & I still look forward to a pint or two with the lads before kick off.

So what is the reason for sudden popularity of Chelsea? In the capital you can’t avoid noticing the Chelsea team shirts being worn by droves of Blues fans. Everyone from babys to pensioners are wearing them.

Before I can let you in on a secret on just how easy it can be to get tickets, lets have a brief look at some of the reasons why the popularity of this club has soared recently.

A Brief History of Chelsea FC

Chelsea Football Club were formed in 1905. Their early years were uneventful & it was many years before they managed to win their first major honour, the league championship in 1955. The late 60s & early 70s however were among the clubs most successful years & the popularity of the Kings Road team grew with the club becoming the most fashionable side in the capital.

In 1970, Chelsea played Leeds Utd in the FA Cup final which resulted in a 2-2 draw. Chelsea managed a 2-1 victory in the replay & the following season, they managed secure the European Cup Winners Cup.

However, as the area became less trendy, the club experienced a decline & spent many years in the 2nd division. They didnt reach the top flight again until 1989. Chelsea FC added further silverware to their trophy cabinet in 1997/98, when winning both the League Cup & European Cup Winners Cup.

Over the coming years the team seemed to be seriously under-achieving until their luck took a turn for the better. Upon purchasing Chelsea FC, few in the football world had even heard of Roman Abramovich, but it wasn’t long before his name was on everyone’s lips as he embarked on what seemed like a non-stop spending spree. Chelsea now had more funds available at their disposal than any other club & it wasnt long before they joined the elite of English football and became a one of “the big four”.

When manager Jose Mourinho arrived at Stamford Bridge, he was brimming with confidence which quickly spread to the team and thier performances. First they won the Carling Cup & then the Premier League in succession. The fans didn’t have too long to wait for another league championship either, as they reclaimed the title the following season. Although Chelesa couldn’t secure the league title for the 3rd year in a row, they did achieve success by winning the FA Cup & Carling Cup.

In late 2007, Jose departed from Stamford Bridge in shock circumstances, & Avram Grant was quickly appointed as his successor. He Led Chelsea to their only UEFA Champions League Final. Unfortunately his contract was terminated in what were perhaps harsh circumstances after Chelsea lost the match on penalties to Man Utd. Brazilian World Cup winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari succeeded Avram, but he also couldn’t manage to fill the void left by Mourinho & was sacked midway through his debut season.

Abramovich turned to coach of his native Russia & appointed Dutchman Gus Hiddink as the new manager. He has so far managed to guide the team to the 2008/09 FA Cup final, after Chelsea narrowly beat Arsenal in a close fought semi-final final. It is however thought that he will leave the club at the end of the season so that he can concentrate his efforts managing the Russian national team.

Now I am going to inform you of the easiest way to get your Chelsea tickets with-out spending hours queuing in the freezing cold. The internet has made it possible to easily buy tickets to watch Chelsea FC and it can all be achieved from anywhere with an internet connection or a telephone. Soccer Nutrition -Essentials You Must Know

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

For someone who is not familiar with soccer, the importance of soccer nutrition might be regarded as a small trivial piece of detail to the whole soccer picture. When it comes to soccer nutrition, there are strong similarities between soccer players’ and long-distance endurance athletes’ nutritional needs.

Soccer involves rapid sprints and eruptions of energy where marathon running is continuous running with moderate intensity. The comparison is not all that far fetched if you keep in mind that soccer players run for a total of about 11 kilometers at a reasonable speed throughout the match and sprint for about 1 kilometer. They accelerate their tempo more or less 50 times and change direction at an average of every five seconds.

Actually, you need to consider every little bit of detail that can influence your performance if you are serious about your game. Soccer nutrition plays a significant role in the success of any soccer player and it is important to know what influence macronutrients, micronutrients, diets, fats, proteins and hydration have on your performance as a soccer player.

The nutritional needs of a general soccer player are underestimated badly. In general, a soccer player needs in the region of 2500 carbohydrate calories per day but only takes in about 1300 calories per day. Carbohydrates, apart from water, are regarded as the key nutrient for soccer players feeing program.

Carbohydrates such as pasta, bread, milk, apples and bananas produce Glycogen that serves as an energy source for your muscles. In order for a soccer player to deliver top performance throughout the whole game, satisfactory levels of Glycogen is essential. Consequences of deficient Glycogen levels will be noticed by poor concentration, fatigue and difficulty to regain strength after a practice session or a soccer match.

A high calorie count is imperative for a soccer player’s diet due to the high levels of activeness they are exposed to. Although it is recommended to limit the intake of fats, it is not a prerequisite to discard all forms of fat from their diets. Fat has low energy and nutritional values and does not provide prolonged energy. A protein intake of about 1,4 to 1,7 grams for each kilogram of body mass per day is sufficient. The main purpose of protein in the diet is to recondition your muscles and care for the immune system. In spite of all the good qualities protein has for a diet, it will not be able to provide the body with the equivalent of vigour that carbohydrates do.

Water is vital to keep the body hydrated. It is highly recommended that small rations of water are consumed during practices and matches and more so in hot weather. It is commonly known that sports drinks manufacturers claim that this beverage will assist you in obtaining the desired performance. The only part of that which is true is that it contains carbohydrates that your body takes up faster than other more complex carbohydrates. This result in a rise in your hypoglycaemic levels making you feels more energetic for a short period. Using sports drinks to substitute a meal before a match is strongly discouraged and should be used as an absolute last resort.

It is advantageous to eat about 700 counts of carbohydrates 4 hours before the start of the match and after a match has finished you must consume carbohydrates and fluids to replenish your body as soon as possible.

Become A Better Soccer Players With Soccer Training Drills

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

If you are going to be successful in sports, you must do training on your own to become a better player. Team practice is there to hone your skills as unit, but to be a better individual player, practice cannot stop once the coach tells you to hit the showers. Here are some soccer training skills to work at to help you become a better player.

One of the most important factors in becoming a good soccer player is soccer speed. You are going to have to be able to get to the ball quicker than your opponents and then in order to score, you are going to have to be able to get around them.

The higher the pace that you can play usually relates to success on the playing field. Your ability to run quickly over short distances and to be able to change direction quickly are the things that you need to work on to establish good soccer speed.

Aerobic conditioning is something that you must focus on in your soccer training. Most starting soccer players are going to be on the move for over 90 consecutive minutes. This means that your level of fitness must be superb in order to be able to maintain a high level. In order to increase your endurance, you should be doing aerobic exercise of over 30 minutes to increase your stamina.

Ball control is essential to any good soccer player. Two of the main things that you will have to work on are receiving and trapping. Becoming a good receiver will enable you to handle the ball, even in traffic and tight spaces. By directing the ball via the middle or top of the ball, you will be able to place it exactly where you want it to go and stay ahead of the defender.

There are going to be times that receiving is not possible and you are going to have to quickly trap the ball before you can move with it. If you can do this quickly, you will barely miss a step and continue down field.

You can trap the ball by squaring up your body to the ball flight and then use your foot as a cushion instead of a director. As the ball arrives, pull your foot backward to cushion the ball and you will control it.

There is also more to control than just using your feet. There are times when you are going to have to use other body parts out of sheer necessity. While foot control is the major factor, being able to control the ball with your head and body is also going to be necessary. When you are using your body, your chest gives you the largest surface to land the ball. Just like you pull your foot back when trapping, you will bend your torso back to receive the ball and cushion the impact. To do this with your head, you will just line yourself up square the ball and as it arrives, you can direct the ball by bending your knees and leaning your upper body forward to direct the ball downward so you can get it back under control with your feet.

Soccer Coaching: How To Do It

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

It is pretty obvious that everyone that has children, at some point, signs their kid up for some sport, mainly soccer. What many parents do not know is that when they sign their daughter or son up for soccer, they could be dropping themselves into a coaching position. Usually, in soccer, there is a lot of soccer coaching opportunities available and as soon as that news hits your child’s ears, you might end up saying yes to becoming a soccer coach. Now, if you are fluent in the game of soccer, you should have absolutely no problems, but if you are not, you definitely need to brush up on your soccer.

After you have decided to accept the position of soccer coach, you now need to learn the rules of the game and just how to play soccer. When you sign up to be a coach, there should be a packet of information outlining the rules of soccer and just how to be a good coach but to be completely honest, most people do not read those.

Soccer is not a hard game to understand but you, as the coach need to come up with positions for your child, a defense system and you really need to know what is allowed and what is not. One of the first things that you need to take into consideration is going to be the age of the team that you are coaching; this will really help you to understand the game a little bit better. Generally, your child will have to be at least seven years old in order to be on a soccer team simply because it can be dangerous.

Formations and positions are two things that are very important in soccer, after all, they are the glue that holds the game together. Learning about the formations as well as the positions is extremely important as this is how you are going to line up your defense. Some of the soccer positions include midfielder, forward, keeper and defender.

One of the most popular formations is going to be 4-4-2. This formation involves using four midfielders, four defenders and two forwards. The eleven position is kept for the keeper of the game.

The reason for the popularity of this particular formation is that the team is well balanced. Thus, making sure that all the players know the purposes of these positions is essential. It is also best to rotate players through each position. Let them learn about each position and then choose who does what best.

Although formations are important, it is definitely important for you to give your team some tactics, drills and skills. These are things that you are going to have to do with your team.

One of the first skills and most important skills that you need to be teaching your players is going to be the passing, shooting, dribbling and playing defense. Most of the other skills can be learned on the field as they are learning soccer the game, but you, as the coach need to come up with drills for each of those four areas.
