Master The Art Of Homemade Winemaking From Scratch… What The Masters Of Winemaking Don’t Want You To Know

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

When you begin processing your own wine at home, you may consider to get a new batch of berries to make your own wine that you have not made before. For a certain type of fruit you have chosen, you probably don’t have a recipe that you can use, so you may be very tempted to produce your own wine recipe.

If you have already been making your own homemade wines for some time now, then creating your own wine recipes should not be a problem because then you should be aware of just how much sugar you need to include in your wine or how much yeast you made need to use. But there are certain precautions or steps you need to follow to make sure your wine turns out great.

The first thing that you will need when preparing your own homemade wine is to think about the amount of fruit that you will need. If you have made wine only with grapes before then, it is important for you to understand that you cannot use the same amount of fruit as you would with grapes because depending on the fruit that you are using depends on how much produce your fruit will be secreting. Also, the strength of the produce secreted by fruits varies.

When creating your own homemade wine, your goal is to make your wine as balanced as possible. When choosing a fruit that extracts a high produce or juice then be sure that you dilute it with a good amount of water. An example of this could be if you are using elderberries as the fruit you have used for your wine, and you prepare it the same way you would if you were processing grape wine then you may end up with a batch of wine that could be undrinkable.

If you are producing a five gallon barrel of your homemade wine, you will need to balance the wine and produce by using the same amount of water to match. If you are using grapes instead of other berries then you should not be using any water because none should be needed. Now lets say you are using ginger root which is a very strong flavor compared to grapes, then you will definitely need to add water to balance out the taste.

So now that we have added the water, it is also critical to choose the correct amount of sugar you will be adding to your homemade wine. The reason being, sugar is what helps the fermentation process. Too much sugar will spoil the fermentation, too little will not help he fermentation. Another critical reason for including the correct amount of sugar in your wine is because the alcohol in your wine is produced by the sugar as well. So again, very little sugar, little to no alcohol. Choosing or figuring out the correct amount of sugar you should be putting into your wine is not very hard. And keep in mind different fruits, produce different amounts of sugar.

Using a hydrometer, you can measure the levels of sugar and alcohol already present in your wine. A hydrometer is very easy to use and does not require any technical knowledge. The reason for using this equipment is to figure out the correct amount of sugar you need to produce the percentage of alcohol you want your homemade wine to have.

It is always important to ensure that your own homemade wine does not contain more than 13% of alcohol, because more alcohol in your wine would disturb the stability and originality of your home made wine.

And these types of wine tools are available in kits which make it easier for the new home wine maker. Most of these kits also include great recipes to get you started as well.

So go ahead and start making your own wine at home. As you can see, it’s really not a hard process. Just make sure, no matter what kind of wine you make, that you follow the directions and your wine will come out to be perfect.

So if you are an avid wine lover or enthusiast I will assume you drink maybe 2-3 glasses of the best wine a day which is the average. Now let’s take a look at this… a bottle of wine could cost anywhere from $10-$1000’s of dollars depending on the kind and quality of the wine. So if you spend an average of $50 per bottle and you buy a bottle a week, you are spending $200 a month and $2,400 a year just on wine! And again that’s only if you spend $50 a bottle, what if you were spending more than that?

So just think of all the money you could be saving just by making your own homemade wine. Yes, it’s easier to just go to the store and buy a bottle, but just think of the accomplishment and enjoyment you will feel when you take that first sip of your own homemade wine. And why not make it a family tradition, something the whole family can enjoy and pass along to their kids as well.
