The 5 Basic Positions in Basketball

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

Basketball players need to fill 5 positions on the court that most coaches will play in a regular game. If you’re new to the game then understanding the five positions is important.

You need to understand what is required of each position, what the job or goal is for each position and the importance of the position to the overall game play. This will help you to be able to take on a position and play it to the best of your ability.

Position One: Point guard

The point guard is usually the fastest player on the team because he or she will be moving around a lot on the court and needs to be able to maneuver quickly. The point guard is responsible for organizing offensive play getting the ball where it needs to go.

Position Two: Shooting guard

The shooting guard is strictly responsible or shooting the ball and making baskets on offensive play. On defense the shooting guard is responsible for guarding the best player on the opposing team’s perimeter.

Position Three: Small forward

The small forward scores via cuts and dribble penetration. This is usually a player that is very good at maneuvering and possibly is the shortest player on the team. The small forward has to be very good at getting past the players on the opposing team. This also is due to the fact that on defense the small forward is responsible for rebounding the ball and making steels.

Position Four: Power forward

The power forward on offense stands with their back to the basket. They are guarding and watching for the perfect chance to take the ball and score. On defense the power forward plays under the basket to get rebounds or against the power forward on the other team to block or intercept.

Position Five: Center

The center uses his size to score. He is usually quite tall and plays at center court. The center usually makes half court shots, but can move about the court and pass the ball to get it at the basket for the shot. On defense the center protects the basket and grabs rebounds.

The coach can change out players as he or she sees fit to switch up the different positions. Some teams may have a different player for offense than for defense, while other teams keep the line up the same. It all depends on the coach and the team.

In general these positions are played in all types of basketball games, even those outside or informal games. The positions all are going after that main goal of making baskets and preventing the other team from making baskets. Players have to learn to play their position while also working with the other players in a team effort. It is important that everyone understands the different positions even if they only play one certain position. This will help to create the synergy that it takes to be the winning team on the court.

Motor Scooter Benefits

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

A motor scooter is a great alternative mode of transportation to combat the rise in fuel prices. They come in a variety of sizes, 50cc scooters to 800cc scooters. Besides the obvious savings with fuel, there are many benefits to owning a gas scooter.

One benefit is that moped scooters are very easy to use. They tend to be quite similar to motorcycles; however, unlike a motorcycle the engine of the moped scooter is located below the seat and above the rear axle. The scooter is also significantly lighter than a motorcycle and the step through frame creates a feature where riders can rest their feet on a platform or footrest instead of pedals. Unlike the motorcycle, there are no shifting gears, making it easy even for kids to operate.

Another benefit of moped scooters is the cost. You can find a quality gas scooter for under $1000. Annual car maintenance is well over that price and you will also spend much more money on fuel. You can see why scooters are so popular around the world and becoming desirable here in America.

With the rising gas prices, it is quite challenging to meet other expenses. Moped scooters will save hundreds or perhaps thousands annually in fuel expenses. Most scooters will get over 80mpg compare to your typical car getting less than 20 mpg.

Another benefit for motor scooters is they are street legal. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) states that mopeds meet their strict standards and can legally be used on most roads. Because most scooters can not attain high speeds, it is a good idea to keep them off the highway or interstate.

As you can see, the benefits of owning a motor scooter are great. Not only are they fun to use and easy to operate, but the gas scooters are very economical. Lastly, you will not have a hard time finding a good parking spot, saving you more time.

XLR Exposed and the Future of Pro Audio Connectors

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

The XLR plug is the standard for pro audio and video applications. The plug is actually an electrical connector by design. Not unlike the more ubiquitous RCA plug , which used regularly with home audio and video electronics, the XLR connector is different in several important ways.

Originally developed and manufactured by James H. the connector was first called the “Cannon X,” and after the addition of a latch the “Cannon XL” and finally the “XLR” after having a rubber compound added to the connectors.

The most common is the 3-pin XLR3, used almost universally as a balanced audio connector for high quality microphones and connections between equipment. Other configurations are also widely used including the 4-pin XLR4, for Clear-Com and Telex intercom headsets and DC power connection for film and video cameras. The XLR5 connector is the standard for DMX512 digital lighting control and also is used for dual element microphones and dual channel intercom headsets. XLR6 is the standard connection for dual channel intercom belt-packs.

There are several now obsolete configurations with additional pins including the XLR-LNE mains power connector, which was identified by its red insulation and shrouded pins, and has now been replace by the Neutrik PowerCon connector. XLR3 connectors were at one time also used extensively on 2-conductor loudspeaker cables, with either pin 2 or 3 as live (depending on the manufacturer) and pin 1 as the earthly return. However, this turned out to be dangerous to equipment and has since been replaced by the Neutrik Speakon connector.

Female XLR connectors are designed to first connect the ground pin before the other pins make contact as the male XLR connector is inserted. Because the ground connection is made first, before the signal lines make contact, XLR connectors can be inserted and removed without interference from external signals, a typical problem with RCA connections. Even nowadays there is discrepancy between different manufacturers between whether pin 2 is udes as the normal input and pin 3 as the inverting input or vice versa, but this reflects nothing more than their own pre-existing standards before any standards existed. Pin 1 is always the ground, or earthly return pin, and is often connected to the internal shell or case.

Lastly, the XLRM male plug is used for output and the XLRF connector is used for input. So, vocal microphones for example will have the XLRM connector. Signal cables will have XLRM at one end and an XLRF connector at the other. Mixers and other multi-track recording equipment components will have XLRF inputs, and XLRM returns to stage, or out to other components.

XLR connectors are the standard in the professional audio and recording industry. XLR plugs are typically referred to as balanced and help reduce noise interference, especially over long spans. Quality in XLR cables varies greatly depending on the manufacturer, but for professional use please check out Canare, Mogami and Neutrik.

In the last few years, USB microphones that have the ability to connect directly to a PC or MAC have gained popularity. USB microphones are becoming increasingly popular as studio microphones, while live stage mics continue to use the standard XLR connectors.

Basketball Goals and Hoops - How to be Safe

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

Basketball is a fun, exciting sport. In is enjoyable to watch and to play. But it can get aggressive and intense as the competition gets underway. When playing on a basketball hoop at home, in the community, or at your local recreation center, safety is a must. Making sure your equipment is safe can give you added peace of mind as you play or watch others play. There are many added features that can enhance safety and reduce the risk of injury.

One way to reduce injuries is to add safety padding to your poles. Since the poles are made of steel, a collision with a pole could be painful and dangerous, especially if a player were to hit his or her head. Safety padding acts as a buffer between players and the poles that support the basketball system. Most pole pads are made for 4′ or 5′ poles. They are made of foam and covered in vinyl and are kept in place by Velcro. They can be 1 ” or 2″ thick.

Some pole pads come with a pyramid shaped gusset pad. This pad covers base plates, gussets, and anchor bolts. Players will appreciate this added safety feature when they tumble out of bounds. All pole pads and pyramid pads are all weather pads which means they can be used on indoor or outdoor basketball systems.

Another way to stay safe is to purchase a ground anchor kit. Anchor kits help mount your basketball system. This tool is ideal for an adjustable or portable system that will remain in one place of a long period of time. It helps add extra stability to the system. Most anchor kits are easy to use and can be removed when needed.

Backboard pads are another important safety feature that is available. It may seem pointless to put pads on a backboard since many players do not jump that high. However, for those who slam dunk, and especially for adjustable systems that can be lowered, backboard pads are a must. These pads protect your head from the sharp edges of the backboard. Most pads are made of a thin enough material to not interfere with rebounds or the quality of the backboard.

Statistically speaking, the net and rim have the most direct contact with players. So you want to make sure these features are safe. Most nets are made of anti-whip nylon which is great for protecting hands and fingers that may get tangled. The anti-whip feature prevents a rope burn from hurting the skin. You should choose a rim that has a totally enclosed mechanism so that if contact is made with the rim, hands and fingers will not be injured.

If you take just a few safety features into consideration when purchasing a basketball system, you can enjoy years of injury free play. Even if the competition is fierce, the players will be protected from injury, as least when it comes to the equipment. So enjoy some fun competition with a basketball hoop and goal that is durable and safe.

6 Ways to Pass a Basketball - Indoor Basketball Hoops

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

Passing the ball is the most effective way to get the ball down the court and into scoring position. It is also the best way because it allows for little interference by the other team. Passing also helps to make a game more fun to watch because it keeps the action exciting for spectators.

There are many ways to pass the ball, but coaches will often focus on the following types of passes because they are what players are most comfortable with. They are also proven methods of passing that work and are efficient. However, the last two passes listed are actually passes that most coaches will discourage for early players and many coaches discourage all together. They are included, though, because they are used often enough and are legal methods of passing that players may want to include in their game.

1. Chest Pass - The most utilized pass in basketball, the chest pass is a quick and efficient pass. It is a snappy move that transfers the ball from one player to the next at chest level. It is usually a straight on pass.

2. Bounce Pass - This pass mirrors the chest pass, somewhat, except the ball bounces once on the floor before getting to the receiver. This pass is also slower, but less likely to be intercepted by an opposing player.

3. Overhead Pass - As the name suggests, this pass is made overhead. It is a perfect pass for getting over defenders in crowded situations.

4. Outlet Pass - The outlet pass is the pass made after a rebound that gets the ball back into play and switches the offense to defense and reverse. It is a simple pass with the main objective of getting the ball to a key player.

5. No-Look Pass - This is one of the passes that coaches often discourage because of the lack of eye contact. However, some situations warrant a no-look pass. As the name suggests this is any pass thrown without looking at the receiver. Usually the main objective during a pass is to watch the receiver and set him up in a good position by passing the ball to where he is going. With this type of pass the player may have to stop or even change direction to prevent the ball from being missed.

6. Behind the Back Pass - Another discouraged pass, the behind the back pass is, as it sounds, made behind the back. There are two problems with this type of pass. First, the player passing the ball has very little control. Proper form can not be taken when passing a ball behind the back. Second, there is the lack of eye contact since the receiver is usually to the side or behind the player.

When passing a player has to be on top of things. A bad pass is not just a bad play, but can actually change up possession of the ball. It can lead to lost points and even loss of the game. Players have to be good passers. They have to learn to maintain eye contact and be able to anticipate the receiver’s moves so they can throw the ball to where the receiver will be, not where they are to allow for smooth play.

Passing is the fastest way to get the ball around on the court and it also helps avoid violations for holding and other dribbling mistakes. Passing also is the best way to move the ball and keep it out of the opposing teams hands.

Become A Better Soccer Players With Soccer Training Drills

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

If you are going to be successful in sports, you must do training on your own to become a better player. Team practice is there to hone your skills as unit, but to be a better individual player, practice cannot stop once the coach tells you to hit the showers. Here are some soccer training skills to work at to help you become a better player.

One of the most important factors in becoming a good soccer player is soccer speed. You are going to have to be able to get to the ball quicker than your opponents and then in order to score, you are going to have to be able to get around them.

The higher the pace that you can play usually relates to success on the playing field. Your ability to run quickly over short distances and to be able to change direction quickly are the things that you need to work on to establish good soccer speed.

Aerobic conditioning is something that you must focus on in your soccer training. Most starting soccer players are going to be on the move for over 90 consecutive minutes. This means that your level of fitness must be superb in order to be able to maintain a high level. In order to increase your endurance, you should be doing aerobic exercise of over 30 minutes to increase your stamina.

Ball control is essential to any good soccer player. Two of the main things that you will have to work on are receiving and trapping. Becoming a good receiver will enable you to handle the ball, even in traffic and tight spaces. By directing the ball via the middle or top of the ball, you will be able to place it exactly where you want it to go and stay ahead of the defender.

There are going to be times that receiving is not possible and you are going to have to quickly trap the ball before you can move with it. If you can do this quickly, you will barely miss a step and continue down field.

You can trap the ball by squaring up your body to the ball flight and then use your foot as a cushion instead of a director. As the ball arrives, pull your foot backward to cushion the ball and you will control it.

There is also more to control than just using your feet. There are times when you are going to have to use other body parts out of sheer necessity. While foot control is the major factor, being able to control the ball with your head and body is also going to be necessary. When you are using your body, your chest gives you the largest surface to land the ball. Just like you pull your foot back when trapping, you will bend your torso back to receive the ball and cushion the impact. To do this with your head, you will just line yourself up square the ball and as it arrives, you can direct the ball by bending your knees and leaning your upper body forward to direct the ball downward so you can get it back under control with your feet.

Before digital technology, camera manufacturers only released new models very infrequently. The rapid advances of digital technology, seems to provide the manufacturers with a seemingly endless supply of good reasons for new models.

They’ve never had so many reasons to release so many new models with so many new bells and whistles. Mind you, some of them are great, but some features are just plain useless. Or if not useless, then probably so buried amongst all the other menu features that most users never know they’re there let alone use them.
