Artists of Hawaii 2009

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

This year will mark the first installment of the biennial Artists of Hawaii 2009. A guest curator will be featured this year who is none other than Laura Hoptman, the senior curator for the New York Museum of Contemporary Art. The event is something that Hawaii residents all look forward to in attending because it will mark again the celebration of the locals’ talents and unique taste of the Arts.

Contemporary Art depicts the art of the Modern times, it is often confused by Post modern because some claim that we actually live in the Post Modern era already and that any art that comes out during these times should be called as “Post Modern”. To avoid confusion let me first give you the difference between Modern, Post modern and Contemporary Art as these are three subjects that are oftentimes misused.

Post modern art is described as the combination of the different Art Styles during the Modern era and these styles includes: Art Nouveau and Art Deco among many others. Post Modern style is always a mixture of two or more style era. Modern Art is described as Art that emerged after the renaissance Period or the Period of “rebirth”. It is oftentimes categorized as the Art created during the 18th to early 19th century. Contemporary Art is used to describe the current trend of Styles during the ongoing era. The term contemporary does not come into existence until the half of 19th century (1950’s) onwards.

Paintings are mostly on display on this exhibit. Expect young and talented artists churning out their fresh minds to create great pieces. Contemporary Hawaiian artists all gather at the Artists Guild to celebrate their talents by showing their creations to spectators and enthusiasts.

Getting The Most Out Of Portrait Photography

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

For many people, portrait photography might be a tough job. Here are a few hints for those who would like to get into this amazing area of photography.

Before we start, you need to realise what portraits are. Any photographs that you snap of your household, friends, relatives or teachers can be called portraits. Yes of course, starting off, portrait photography might seem to be rather difficult when compared to standard photography, but as you get more engaged in it, it comes more and more easy to you.

What do you call successful portrait photography? It is actually something which builds up a kind of special feeling on the viewers. Now, what makes a portrait photograph stand out? It might be due to several ingredients like the physical scene of the photograph, the subject matter, or it can even be the some other noted features like the background, the light arrangement and so on. A portrait always imprints some kind of impression on the mind about the person in it, otherwise it cannot be termed as a portrait photograph. Anything can turn out to be attractive in the person being photographed like the mannerism, the attitude, the mood or even a casual look.

Being a good photographer is an inherent skill but despite this it can still be learnt. The trick to learning is to let go, experiment, and have fun. Allow your creativity to flow and you will amaze yourself!

In portrait photography, the photographer is taken to be the leader for that time, and he should be able to bring up a striking difference in his subjects energy. For this, you need to start with a small discussion with the person on any current issues or something which might produce a strong impact so as to create the opportunity to take a ideal portrait photograph. If you can trigger off a change in thinking and mood of a person in a good way quickly then this will allow you to capture some amazing photos. This is just one way to move your subject into a different feeling space. Of course you do now want to make them angry but you do want to arise within them different feelings so that their expressions become more acute and distinct creating great pics.

Everything depends on you as the photographer to set the scene so an amazing result can be captured. As well as conversation, controlling the natural surroundings can be utilized to create the special outcome in the portraits. To come up with the best snap, it is very important to cooperate with the person and the environment. You should have good interest in people so that the natural expressions of the person can be seen.

At the end of the day the trick is to be able to trigger a change in emotionality with your photographic subject so that new and amazing expressions can be seen on their face.

The Finer Details Of Buying A Digital Camera

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

I knew that i needed a new camera when I reached the point of couldn’t getting more from the point-and-shoot Canon PowerShot devices that i have been using for six years now. I took a lot of pictures, because they’re handy and portable and I always had my camera with me, but I started experiencing problems like poor performance at low-light settings and delay between shots.

Not too much of a revelation, but that big bad tool is of course the internet. As with any tool, the trick is often to know how to use it. I’ve got this really fancy wood working router on my workbench, but hell if I know what to do with it. It’s been sitting there for years.

Why I chose the Nikon over the Sony is simple: it’s less heavy and compact, making it easier to carry; also, the LCD menu is intuitive and clear and, of course, because Nikon is well-respected for the fine lenses it produces, and in a DSLR it’s really about which line you want to follow in purchasing lenses in the future.

Even though the camera doesn’t fit in my pocket like I used to carry my point-and-shoot devices, it’s still pretty comfortable to have with you. Thanks to kit lens’ VR (vibration reduction) and its neat balance with the camera’s compact body, the weight of the lens won’t point it down.

Although you will find that DVD camcorders are more expensive than Mini DV, they will still save you a lot of trouble. DVD camcorders are capable of saving images straight to your digital video disc which you can keep for a long time.

One thing you should know about this camera is that auto-focus only works with Nikon AF-S lenses. So you’ll have to manually focus when using most Nikon “prime” lenses. It also lacks live preview. You only see your picture on the LCD screen after you’ve pushed the button.

Always consider the digital camcorder’s features before making a choice. Give importance to the way it has been created. Hold the camcorder for a few minutes to check your chemistry with the best digital camcorder you have. If it is possible, try out the lighting and effect features of the digital camcorder to test it up.

Canon Powershot SD1100IS Camera

Monday, April 13th, 2009

I’ve been using a Canon Powershot I2 IS for the full 3 years now. Very solid digital camera with a great 12X zoom. However, I needed a camera to carry in my pocket. So many times I just didn’t want to drag a large camera with me to parties or events. This camera fills the bill. I now carry it everywhere.

The photos it creates are stunning. The 8 megapixels and 3X zoom produces a picture that you can crop to the point that you get almost the same image as you would have with the 5 megapixels 12X zoom lens. The film feature is great too, even greater than the I2 IS.

The camera feels great in your hand with a solid, superior feeling. If you have used Canon cameras before the menus are very intuitive. I would not have purchased this camera (or any camera for that matter) if it did not have the Picture Stabilization feature. This is especially a must as you get older.

We did close-up photographs on flowers and even hair and eyelashes and it’s impressive what resolution we got with the camera and with such clarity. The camera is accessible to use and is little smooth and compact. I got the one in brown color and it looks different and sohpisticated without searching too overly girly or masculine. Sound quality through the video recording was crisp and images were good and clear and not at all pixelated.

By the way there is an advantage to the Brown color: If you get to use the optical view finder outside, the camera itself makes minimal glare for you eye to see more clearly through the small opening. The color also makes the LCD playback pop. And as a bonus, it truly makes the camera a luxury look, you have to see it in person to value the color.

I recently took it to a monthly card party and everyone went wild over it. So much so that one individual sat right down at the computer and bought one!

If you want a sub-compact, little camera that makes great images, I highly recommend the Canon SD1100IS. Definitely a good buy and well worth the money.

Some Astranomical Facts

Monday, April 13th, 2009

How much information on astronomy should there be for all the objects and phenomenon in the entire universe? Consider that there are somewhere around 1 x 10 ^22 stars in the universe, that’s a one followed by 22 zeros. Then consider that many of those stars have planets revolving around them. Then consider all the moons that orbit those planets, then the comets and asteroids, the galaxies these stars form, the nebulae and black holes and everything else out there. The amount of information and data is staggering. This article, which presents astronomy facts, certainly won’t contain every fact. But these are quite interesting facts nevertheless.

Shall we start by taking a look at a small aspect of astronomy: which are the brightest stars seen from the Earth? - except the Sun, that is, which is just about 250,000 times nearer than the next closest star. In fact, it is so bright that when the sky is viewed from the Earth, it’s light blinds out all the other stars in the sky during a phenomenon called daytime.

So, keep in mind while reading this list that according to the scale used, lower numbers are brighter. The Sun would be about -26.73, whereas the full moon is -12.6; bearing that in mind, here are the top 5:

#5 is Vega, meaning ” falling eagle” in Arabic. is in Lyra. It’s more or less 25 light years away and has a magnitude of 0.04.

NB: when thinking about this astronomical information, please just bear in mind that the ‘brightest from the Earth’ doesn’t mean ‘largest’ or ‘brightest’. The Sun is not the largest or brightest star in the universe or even the galaxy by any means, but it seems to be so bright to us because we are near to it compared to the other stars.

#4 Rigel Kentaurus is a very bright, bluish-white supergiant star in the constellation of Orion. It is a binary star, with an average apparent magnitude of 0.12. It’s scientific name is Beta Orionis. ‘Rigel Kentaurus’ is Arabic for the ‘foot of the centaur’. It’s about four light years from Earth.

#3 is Arcturus. The translates as ‘guardian of the bear’ from the Greek. This star is about 37 light years away from us. It is situated in the constellation of Bootes, close to The Great Bear. It has a magnitude of 0.00

#2 Canopus. Of the top five, Canopus, the Greek name for the pilot of the ship Argo in the stories about Jason and the Argonauts, is the brightest, but because it is 313 light years from Earth, it’s only second on this list of the five brightest stars seen from Earth. It has a magnitude of -.62.

#1 is Sirius, meaning ’scorching’ in Greek. It’s also called the ‘Dog Star’ because it is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (’The Big Dog’). It’s only 9 light years from Earth. That’s second closest of these top five. But from Earth it has a magnitude of -1.44. That makes it easily the brightest star as seen in the night sky.

This information doesn’t even scratch the surface on the subject of astronomy facts but it’s something to consider next time you look into the night sky.
