Mailpost The case of MailPost is a clear example of an innovative business model, whereby its Unique Selling Proposition (USP) was actually a franchisee investing and having a stake in the MailPost business, thus offering a higher level of guaranteed service than what was available through an employee or contractor model that was the norm. This USP during a GFC also became the "Achilles Heel" as recruitment of franchisees practically came to a standstill. MailPost relied on a recruitment schedule to establish the mailpost letterbox distribution service on a National basis. Whilst the CEO had a track record of positive growth and profits prior to the GFC and maintained a positive attitude towards a solution to get through the crisis, this leader was not supported but was rather asked to step aside. Mailpost There is no doubt that the recent Global Financial Crisis had a huge impact on many CEO's around the world whether their business was established or in a start up phase. Stress levels reached new heights for leaders as the economic pressure were felt. Successful Leaders anticipate change, vigorously exploit opportunities, motivate their followers to higher levels of productivity, correct poor performance, and lead the organisation toward its objectives. A review of the leadership literature, in fact, led two academics to conclude that the research shows consistent effect for leadership, explaining 20 to 45% of the variance on relevant organisational outcomes. Training and the effectiveness of leadership programs vary. They will because the programs themselves are so diverse. Moreover, people learn in different ways. Because some leadership programs are better than others and because some people participate in programs that are poorly matched to their needs and learning style, we should expect leadership-training effectiveness to have a spotty record. So decision makers need to be careful in choosing leadership training experiences for their managers. But they shouldn't conclude that all leadership training is a waste of money. In conclusion we say that leadership training is a more positive feature provided it is imparted to managers who have come up in the organisation to a certain level by their natural ability and the leadership training will definitely hone their skills to achieve much better performance and capable of taking higher responsibilities. --------------------------------

LEADERSHIP TRAINING - IS IT NECESSARY? Organisations spend billions of dollars on leadership training every year. They send managers and manager-wannabes to a wide range of leadership training activities, formal MBA programs, leadership seminars, weekend retreats, and even outward bound adventures. They even appoint mentors but much of this effort to train leaders is probably a waste of money. Let's base our thoughts on looking at two fundamental assumptions that underlie leadership training. Mailpost The first assumption is that we think we know what leadership is? Experts cannot agree if leadership is a genetic trait, a characteristic, a behavior, a role, a style, an ability or a learned attribute. Further, they cannot even agree on whether leaders really make a difference in organisational outcomes. For instance, some experts have persuasively argued that leadership is merely an attribution made to explain organisational successes and failures, which themselves occur by chance. Leaders are the people who get credit for successes and take the blame for failures, but they may actually have influence over organisational outcomes. Mailpost The second basic assumption is that we can train people to lead. The evidence here is not very encouraging. We do seem to be able to teach individuals about leadership. Unfortunately findings indicate we are not so good at teaching to lead. Mailpost There are several possible explanations. To the degree that personality is a critical element in leadership effectiveness; some people may not have been born with the right personality traits. A second explanation is that there is no evidence that individuals can substantially alter their basic leadership style. A third possibility is that even if certain theories could actually guide individuals in leadership situations and even if individuals could alter their style, the complexity of those make it nearly impossible for any normal human being to assimilate all the variables and be capable of enacting the right behaviors in every situation. Mailpost Leadership training exists, and is a multibillion-dollar industry, because it works to some degree. Most Leaders would agree that although some knowledge is gained during atraining session, for the most part it is the confidence to lead that is greatly enhanced. Leaders are decision makers which are rational and emotional beings. Mailpost Would a company like General Electric spend literally tens-of-millions of dollars each year on leadership training if it did not expect a handsome return? I don't think so! And the ability to lead successfully is why companies pay CEO's millions and in some case over $100 million to ensure the success of the enterprise. Under their leadership, many companies have experienced spectacular growth including shareholder gains. Mailpost While there are certainly disagreements over the exact definition of leadership, most academics and business people agree that leadership is an influential process whereby an individual, by his or her actions, facilitates the movement of a group of people toward the achievement of a common goal. Ensuring that the group have a culture of working together in a Team spirit and respecting their leader is of prime importance. Mailpost Do Leaders affect organisational outcomes in all situations? For instance, the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) resulted in the collapse of large financial institutions, the bailout of banks by national governments and downturns in stock markets around the world. In many areas, the housing market has also suffered, resulting in numerous evictions, foreclosures and prolonged vacancies. It is considered by many economists to be the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Mailpost It contributed to the failure of key businesses, declines in consumer wealth, substantial financial commitments incurred by governments, and a significant decline in economic activity. Many causes have been proposed, with varying weight assigned by experts. Both market-based and regulatory solutions have been implemented or are under consideration, while significant risks remain for the world economy over the 2010-2011 periods. Mailpost National business's like MailPost (franchised delivery Network) and many others in a start up phase launched their services during the GFC. In this case a high growth cycle practically came to a standstill. Mr Peter Kritas, the CEO and founder of MailPost Australia Limited from July 2006 till March 2009, was asked to step aside and allow new management to take over the Leadership of MailPost during a very critical period. During difficult situations, it is not uncommon to lose confidence in the Leadership and change management to try and fix the situation. This sort of behaviour should always be exercised with caution as it can do more harm than good. There are clearly some business situations that are beyond any Leaders ability to rectify and wasting time and resource in a change of management is not the best option. In many cases Leaders need more support during a crisis from their management Team to maintain confidence.

How To Find Good PWC Covers

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

This season what you need for your personal watercraft is a pwc cover. A tailor-fit or custom-made cover designed exactly for your make and model of watercraft will be the best investment you can make. You can find a cover that will custom fit just about any watercraft that you might own these days. Manufacturers, dealers, after-market accessory shops will carry a good selection, although it’s probably easier to order on-line and have it shipped rather than try to find a pwc cover for your exact model in stock.

Let’s talk about what you have to worry about when you are looking for a pwc cover. First - choose a perfect fit. Why does it have to be ‘perfect’? For one thing, it just looks better. Secondly, a tight fitting cover protects your pwc better, especially when trailering. There’s nothing worse than a loose fitting cover whipping against your boat causing wear and tear, not to mention the possibility of the ‘parachuting’ effect causing a hazard to you and anyone following you.

Now, second to a tailored fit, material is probably the second most important factor when you are considering pwc covers. The material that is used will determine how well and for how long your cover will protect your boat.

When it comes to material choice, Sunbrella is probably the most popular option - at least if you’re looking at quality pwc covers. The advantages to Sunbrella are it’s patented sun-resistent abilities, especially in particularly hot and harsh conditions. Secondly, it is a woven fabric, which means it breathes. This is important because breathable fabrics allow moisture and heat to escape, thereby protecting your pwc from heat buildup and damaging mildew formation. In addition, the woven material adds tear resistance for extra durability.

Regardless of whether you are looking for a seadoo cover, Yamaha pwc cover, Kawasaki pwc cover, a doger, bimini, or any other kind of boat cover that you can imagine, it is important to keep these two factors in mind - exact fit, and a durable material. Color choice helps to make your ride look good, but a cheap cover that looks ratty in less than a year just isn’t worth skimping on.

So do you need to get your pwc cover right from the manufacturer to ensure the best fit and quality? The truth is, there are a lot of after market pwc cover manufacturers that design covers specifically for each particular make and year - so no, the best quality doesn’t always come from the manufacturer. Your mileage will vary though, and you need to ensure you are getting the quality you expect, so do a little research before you choose a brand. However, if you really want your pwc brand logo on your cover, then you may have no option but to buy from the manufacturer.

So now that you know the important things to watch for when looking for your sea doo cover, you can feel safe that you will find the best option to protect your summer lake toy. The only other thing you’ll have to decide is whether that really awesome custom designed 3-d flame embossed cover is worth twice the price, but more importantly, whether they make it in a shred resistant breathable material.

Go to Seadoo Covers to find out more about pwc seadoo covers.

Wear Your Wetsuits!

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

A wetsuit is an important gear for someone who loves water sports. Whether it is a scuba diving wetsuit, a surfing wetsuit or a wakeboarding wetsuit, whatever is the wetsuit for, it is important to know how wetsuits work.

All wetsuits are made for one purpose, and it is preserving your body heat when you do water sports on during cold seasons or when you work in cold waters. They protect the body by letting a limited amount of water into the suit.

This will then act as an insulator protecting the wearer from hypothermia, a fatal condition where the body temperature abnormally drops. Body heat is affected rapidly by water as it conducts heat more efficiently than air, so the risk of hypothermia is faster.

Wetsuits do its work mainly by the material it is made of. Neoprene, a synthetic flexible rubber, is the material used to make wetsuits. Neoprene has bubbles of nitrogen that preserves the warmth of the wearer.

Aside from keeping the body heat, Neoprene is also buoyant and very light. This has become another benefit of wetsuits to triathlon athletes and swimmers. In scuba diving however, where a user is suppose to submerge into the water, divers are advised to choose a certain thickness of their wetsuits that neutralizes their buoyancy in water.

It is however required that a wetsuit should fit the wearer snugly in order for the wetsuit to work efficiently. A loose wetsuit can let water between the body and the suit escape and can take along the body heat, defeating its purpose. It should not however be too tight that the wearer cannot move freely. For a surfing wetsuit, make sure that the suit fits well on the neck to avoid cold water blasting down into your back.

Wetsuits can make you warm but they can’t keep you dry. In fact, a small amount of water should enter into these suits to make it work properly.

You may want to choose a differently styled wetsuit, a stylish one, or a thick one or something with padded knees, but all these wetsuits work the same.

They are made for protection. They do not only keep you safe from hypothermia, they also keep you away from underwater injuries when diving and from stings of this slimy little jellyfishes.

Know What to Wear - a Wetsuit or a Drysuit

Monday, April 13th, 2009

What are wetsuits and what makes them different from drysuits? Wetsuits and drysuits are both important equipment for people who engage in water sports and those who work in cold waters.

A wetsuit is a garment worn to protect the wearer from losing body heat when submerged in cold or icy waters. It works by trapping a layer of water in the suit that eventually maintains body heat.

A drysuit on the other hand is a garment also worn to protect the wearer from the cold. As their names suggest, drysuits keep you dry while wetsuits allow water to come in between your body and the suit. Drysuits have tight seals on the parts where wetsuits have openings that allow water in. Below are other differences you might find between these two.

Material used

Drysuits are made of nylon or a combination of nylon and rubber or foam neoprene. Wetsuits on the other hand are made of a very flexible rubber, Neoprene.

How it works

Wetsuits work by letting a small amount of water into the openings. This water will be warmed by the body and will act as an insulator against cold.

Drysuits are waterproofed and wind-proofed and designed to make the wearer dry from the neck, the body, the arms and the legs. Body heat in this case is sealed inside the suit. The wearer can also put on additional clothing underneath a drysuit to add more warmth to the body.

What to use

Temperature is a factor when to use drysuits and wetsuits. Drysuits are worn when water temperature reaches 60F or 15C and below. It can also be worn even if water temperature is above 60F if the wearer intends to stay in the water for a longer duration and if wetsuits are not comfortable enough.

Wetsuits on the other hand is worn at temperatures above 60 degrees. Both garments come in different forms like jacket, vest, shorty or long john, so you can choose to wear both, one for the upper body and the other for the bottoms or any combination you need.

Cost

Drysuits are generally priced higher than wetsuits because they tend to preserve body heat longer than wetsuits. They are also more durable than wetsuits.

What Surfboarding Is All About

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

A good thing about surfing, especially if you are in a tropical area with a lot of sun, is that you will be exposed to the opposite sex all of the time. If you are surfing everyday you should have a good tan and be in pretty good shape, have no problem finding dates, and most of all have great skill in riding waves, we hope.

The majority of surfers put a lot of thought into the type of surfboard that they will use. The length of the board should fit the length of their bodies and any other size will not work right or look right when the surfer is under scrutiny by spectators on the shore. Most surfers will learn about surfboards from friends, and some surf shop owners will share interesting surfing anecdotes with them if business is slow.

The surfer that is just starting out, will quickly catch on to the terms that surfers commonly use. This is more than just a dialect, more aimed towards the types of moves that you can do on a surfboard, for example many people already know what the surf term hang ten is.

For the beginner a short board will be the best option, but some more experienced surfers prefer long boards, which are a bit more difficult to learn on and much harder to ride. Style is also another choice of what surfers choose from. It could be the design on their surfboard, their surf fin, or just what they are wearing before they get in the water.

Then there are those surfers that do not care what kind of gear they use, and just do it for the love of the sport. They just want to get in the water in a hurry, purchasing the cheapest board they can get and once they get in the water they see that it is too hard to use.

This could happen because the surfboard has been damaged in some way while surfing and is showing signs that it retains water. If they had done some research through the internet, they could have learned to recognize the warning signs for a surfboard that should not be used anymore.

Some surfboards are unfit for use in the water simply because a previous owner has not tended to the surfboard properly. One of the important factors that every surfer learns is that a surfboard needs to be waxed on a regular basis. This preparation technique is necessary because wax allows the surfer to grip the surfboard with the soles of their feet.

If you are just getting on the board in the water for the first time, you should practice letting the wave take you in first. There is a lot of paddling involved, once you have this down work on standing up on the board. Practice makes perfect, and with enough of it you could be riding a wave back to the beach in less than a week.
